My Great Onam

Well, today I celebrated an Indian holiday called Onam. It was pretty fun. I got eat rice with my whole family, with a mixture of curries! It was on a banana leaf. I really had fun.

Most of you don't know what Onam is, so let me tell you the story.

In Hindu mythology, the devas (good gods) fought against the Asuras( bad gods). However there was1 asura, Mahabali, who was good. He ruled what is now the state of Kerala, in India. There was peace, no bad guys, thefts, or anything! The devas were jealous, and went to the god Vishnu for help. He took form as a boy, his fifth avatar. He went to Mahabali and asked him for three feet of land. Mahabali, who gave anything to those who asked, said yes. Suddenly, the boy grew and grew, until he was a giant and had three feet. One feet covered the earth, the next the sky, but the third foot nothing. The giant asked Mahabali were would the third feet go. Mahabali said he would give himself. So, the giant put his third feet on Mahabali, and sent him to the Underworld. Each year, Mahabali comes to visit the people of Kerala on Onam.

Indian? I thought you were American...

Anyway, that's an interesting story. But, if Mahabali was good, shouldn't he have been a devas? Either ways, I'm sure you had a lot of fun.

That's interesting. I've never heard of Onam. though I live in a multi-racial Country. I guess I go ask my friend about it tomorrow.

Sounds like you sure had fun! That's good. I'm glad at least some others had a good time recently.
I'd really like to know what do you do during this holiday.... Sounds very epic.
